With our heartfelt gratitude, I also offer our pledge to fulfill His Majesty’s vision for a nation founded on the philosophy of Gross National Happiness and the principles and ideals of Democracy.

Tomorrow is a very special day for the Bhutanese. Tomorrow, the 17th of December, 2007 we celebrate 100 years of Monarchy in Bhutan. It was on the 17th of December in 1907 that Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck was crowned as the first king of Bhutan.

In celebration of this important occasion my art club (VAST Bhutan) is organizing an exhibition titled “Bhutan through 100 years”. The following pictures are my contribution to the exhibition - digital mosaics of the 5th and the 4th Druk Gyalpos.

The first is the peace, security and prosperity for Bhutan now and in the future. Second issue that I consider very important for our country’s future is the achievement of the goals of Gross National Happiness. The third is building a vibrant democracy for our country.

Addressing the nation on the auspicious occasion of the National Day of Bhutan, I find myself at a loss of words. For 34 years, His Majesty the King has been the heart and essence of the nation, her King and guardian, our parent and inspiration.

The immense achievements of His Majesty including the legacy of a sound democratic constitutional monarchy are milestones not only in the history of our small kingdom, but of the world.

I believe this momentous occasion is a time for reflection. For deep in our hearts as Bhutanese citizens, we will be able to see beyond the pain of His Majesty’s selfless act, and find that this special nation built by His Majesty, is left to none other than the people of Bhutan. Such devolution is a source of great optimism for our future. For I share His Majesty’s complete faith in the people and I believe that we will, as His Majesty has bestowed today, leave to our own children such a gift in 30 years.

“We must work hard, we must make our country stronger, more secure and richer year after year” said His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.

His Royal Highness was addressing the 777 university graduates at the conclusion of the graduates orientation programme in Thimphu on Thursday.

His Royal Highness reminded the graduates that as they embarked on their future careers they must always bear in mind that the Bhutan of today was born out of the hard work and sacrifices of many generations of Bhutanese.

Even beyond this, it had taken immense hard work and the visionary leadership of His Majesty the King since 1972, to bring Bhutan from a period of great uncertainty to one of peace and prosperity. Today Bhutan is not only a strong and secure nation but one on the path to democracy. Such a country with strong foundations was now being handed over to the people.
