4th of October, 2005. I was guiding for an American couple who had just gotten married. We were on the Laya Lingshi trek, camped at Chebisa, a small beautiful village 5 hours from Lingshi. That day we were supposed to cross the Goku La (4350m), but when we woke up in the morning, we were covered in snow. It had been a wet trek since we crossed Chomolhari 3 days back, and to wake up again with snow falling heavy was not something all of us were looking forward to. Our boots were wet, sleeping bags were damp, and we were running out of dry clothes. It was so tempting that day to call for a break, and somehow make up for the lost day along our trek. We still had 7 days to hit the road. No one was in a hurry that morning, and as the lead guide, everyone was waiting for me to announce the halt.

Just then, this young girl peeped into our kitchen tent where we were having breakfast. She was wet, having walked in the snow, but she had a the most beautiful smile. She was dressed in a short kira, and quite a thin tego, and on her feet, she had red gum boots. No socks. This beautiful girl, oblivious of the cold, with a smiling and very happy face totally lifted our spirit that day. We trekked on.
I have looked at these pictures of this girl many many times, and she always manages to make me feel happy. On this Losar, I would like to share these pictures with you, and it would be nice if you could spare a thought to all those people who live in our small villages like Chebisa.
Happy Year of the Ox.

Kind-heartedness is better than religiosity;
Religiosity is an ornament of the mouth;
A good mind is the path to heaven.

Aue, thank you…for inspiring me to be an independent person in the tech field. I will always remain thankful to you for helping me unconditionally when I first started my career.
Happy Belated Losar…one and all….
* I will remember the smile when I am going through the hard times.
I have to be honest – It made me sad & smile for some reason. Maybe coz she looks happy despite being in the freezing cold & soaking wet from the snow, maybe because my little boy & I have it so much better and we still complain, maybe because we can only appreciate but can’t do more? That picture is a winner though. It tugs at your heart…. it sure tugged at mine!! Its almost June 2009 so I’m a bit late for Losar and too early for the next. So happy next half!!
